Are you worth your salt? Historically we’ve equated salt with value, and only in recent history has salt been maligned and misunderstood. The talk below covers biohacking with salt, butter and coffee. Salt is not the enemy. Secret butter powers are revealed. Bulletproof Coffee continues to be my favorite biohack.

This talk took place in March 2012, at the BIL 2012 conference aboard the Queen Mary.

 Covered in the talk below:
  • How and why salt, butter and coffee are essential to health.
  • Debunking the myths about salt and butter.
  • Clarifying the benefits of mold free coffee.

Great message. Would love a copy of these slides plus the references. Any chance of that happening?

    • Dave Asprey

      Working on it!

Sent from my nobile phone. You understand…

      • Andrew

Agreed. This in a “webinar” tape format with the slides and your voice would be a very powerful tool

Dave, how long do you recommend Bulletproof intermittent fasting? My wife and I are on day 4 of it and feel great. We don’t have much more weight to lose. We want to build muscle and feel healthy and flexible and pain free. Is Bulletproof IF something that you do for life or just an occasional way to maintain your health?

    • Dave Asprey

I do it 5 days a week usually; I feel better on it than when I have breakfast.

    Hey Dave,

My wife and I started Bulletproof intermittent fasting and feel great! How long do you recommend that people stay on this? Is it a temporary thing or a permanent plan?

    Thanks for all you do!

  • Stephan Raczak

Is the Bulletproof Mindware app you mentioned really free of charge? Because here in Europe, the Google Play Store demands a charge of €3,19. Is that different from the US version?

    Thanks for any advice

    • Dave Asprey

It was free for a while!

  • KMegafauna

Dave, do you eat 10 grams of salt (NaCl) or 10 grams of sodium (Na) per day?

That picture of moldy coffee would be very useful for the sake of comparison IRL. Where did you get it, and if you took it, could you post it?

    • Dave Asprey

I will post the deck with the image!

  • Kenneth

Also, Dave, it would be nice if you started getting the citation lists for your recent presentations out there because they’re amazing reading when I can find them!

      Happening ASAP!

David, I love bulletproof coffee, however eating 60%/40% F/P diet to satiation is causing me to gain fat. I am up 2kgs in two weeks, pants noticeably tighter. Could you please do an article on leptin and how to hack it?
I have read the book mastering leptin and I know Jack Kruse and Tim Ferris recommend high protein breakfasts, which does not work with bulletproof fasting. I have tried various things to regulate my appetite better, but unless I calorie control and remain hungry, I always gain weight! Do you have any advice or tips, please?

    • Dave Asprey

Too much protein! Knock it back to 20% not 40%!

  • Love the bulletproof coffee – 7 days a week for me; 4Tbsp of Kerrygold and 2Tbsp MCT oil.

    How much salt?

  • Thomas K

Your points on coffee/bulletproof fasting inhibiting mTOR were interesting (I’ve always been a skinny/slim guy).

Most days I undertake IF and drink 2-3 coffees by 2pm and I exercise 2-3 times a week. My exercise regime consists of sprints and a kettle bell workout (no more than 25 mins all up).

Results: I am probably now the most muscly I’ve ever been in my life and it didn’t take that much effort.

“Eat more fat, drink more coffee, exercise less and watch the muscle grow” – It almost seems like a late night TV commercial.

      Heya Tom and or Dave,
I’m skinny as all get out also (6’6″ and about 180 lb), I’m really curious how the intermittent fasting goes for us skinny folks. Would we shrivel up to nothing or is it possible that inhibitiing mTOR may ‘train’ the body to store glycogen better as it begins to rely on it for energy. Staying the same is also not a bad alternative. I also work an incrediblly physically demanding job, similar to working out 5 days a week. Any advice would be appreciated.

Is anyone here drinking unfiltered coffee, regularly? I do not concern myself with cholesterol levels and am interested in the anti-inflammatory and cognitive benefits of the two substances mentioned in the video. On salt, does anyone here start their day with a salt chug? I often take 1/4-1/2 tsp of Himalayan salt and drink it with water.

    • Dave Asprey

I’m all about unfilteted coffee…but you already knew that!

      Like Turkish coffee?

  • Joey

good talk. too bad that computer/slide thingy sucked so bad. grrrrr. I remember years ago when we were chelating mercury from my daughter with DMSA. I told the doc she always wants salt, the doc said, “let her have as much as she wants” was the first time I’d ever heard that!

  • Gabriel

I am trying to eat butter but it produces more skin sebum. Any suggestion?

    • Dave Asprey

It won’t if it’s grass fed and you are not eating omega 6 oils…

  • Michael

Just watched your talk and had an idea for a nice little drink:
1/4 tsp of sea salt, 2 tsps of apple cider vinegar, half a glass of water – excellent aperitif !

    Hi Dave

  • Can I tell how bulletproof a coffee bean is via its appearance? i.e. does toxic mould produce any visual changes in the bean? We have a coffee shop in Colombia and at the moment – we judge bulletproofness on taste and the amount of ‘head’ in an espresso.

I have had ongoing problems with anxiety and racing thoughts but discovered that eating salt stops it dead. I feel inexplicable tension and stress building, as I often do, but now I just put a few dashes of salt in my mouth and down it with a large glass of water. The anxiety just melts away over the next couple minutes.

Am I placebo-ing myself or is there some basis for this effect? It seems very real and almost instantaneous.

    • frank

You know it occurs to me barbiturates mostly seem to be sodium salts. I’m curious what role sodium plays in the brain.

  • abear

Dave, what is better? Adding a teaspoon of salt to water in the morning or adding a brine/sole solution to water and drinking that?

    • HeatherENowak

  • So, are blood pressure lowering drugs basically just himalayan sea salt in a capsule?

Hi Dave, I’d love to hear your thoughts on using Vega One while on the Bulletproof Diet. Also, do you have product distribution in Toronto Canada? If so where can I go to buy Bulletproof products.
