This chocolate shell recipe closely mimics the classic Magic Shell sauce you can find in the grocery store. If you’ve never had it before, this sauce takes ice cream to a whole new level: Like magic, this liquid sauce hardens the moment it touches frosty ice cream and adds a little bit of sweet crunch to every bite.

The problem with store-bought Magic Shell is that it can contain inflammatory oils and milk additives, both of which won’t make you feel so good after eating them. This chocolate shell upgrades the original recipe with ingredients that make the same “magic” while nourishing your mind and body.

This keto, paleo, and vegan chocolate shell only requires four ingredients, and you don’t even need to refrigerate it. If you do store in the refrigerator, you’ll need to gently heat it in a small saucepan to create a liquid consistency again.

Keto Chocolate Shell Sauce – Homemade Magic Shell

Start to Finish: 2 minutes


  • 1/2 cup cacao powder
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1-2 teaspoon liquid stevia, or to taste (or preferred sweetener of choice)
  • Optional: A few drops of food-grade peppermint or orange essential oil to taste


  1. In a bowl, mix all ingredients together until evenly combined.
  2. Taste the sauce and adjust the sweetness if desired.
  3. Store in a glass jar, with or without refrigeration.
