A few days ago we received a wonderful gift in our inbox: notification that The Better Baby Book is NOW available  on Kindle or by order for paperback on Amazon!

We are so happy that we can finally share our years of research and our personal experiences from pre-conception through to raising our children. In 2006, Dave and I were ready to start our family and decided to combine our knowledge to figure out how to have the healthiest, happiest and brightest baby we could. At the same time we wanted to reduce the risk of autism, allergies, asthma and other common developmental issues as much as possible.  With Lana’s background as a medical doctor and my expertise in nutrition and supplements, we had some amazing results, and today we’re the proud parents of two healthy, happy kids.  Much of this research has improved what makes me Bulletproof . This book is our way of sharing what we learned, what works with parents-to-be, and parents everywhere!

Whether you’re planning for pregnancy or are already pregnant, this essential prenatal guide draws on the latest genetic research to give you a complete program of specific nutrition and environmental lifestyle changes that can help you have a better baby. The book is based on the emerging science of epigenetics and shows how the environment interacts with your genes, affecting which genes are expressed or “turned on”. It shows you the important steps you can take to improve preconception nutrition and reduce toxins in your home and body to consciously help your child express the right genes. To be healthy, smart, strong and resilient.

What if you don’t want kids?  This book was written with optimal functioning, reducing inflammation, toxins and hormone balancing in mind, even if a pregnancy isn’t in your near future, much of the information will enhance your understanding of what it means to make yourself Bulletproof—what you do and eat can cause not only your baby’s epigenetic expressions to turn on or off, but your own.

Fertility is often a sign of good health, whether you’re male or female.  Our concern for creating an optimal environment for a baby means it is an optimal environment for your brain, muscles and heart.  The research in this book will help you avoid adrenal fatigue and hormone problems among other things. There is a reason Bulletproof intermittent fasting is helpful for women. And it works, for many, way faster than it should.

Help us share what we’ve learned by ordering The Better Baby Book, and/or “liking” it on Amazon. If you order an e-copy on Kindle please give an honest review on Amazon to help show your support.

Congrats on the Better Baby Book! It was fantastic and I learned so much!

However, I got concerned when you mentioned green tea increasing the need for folate/folic acid. You see, I’m a white tea junkie… So, I did a little search and it looks like the EGCG in tea interferes with the conversion of folic acid to folate (similar mechanism to methotrexate – messes with DHFR).

Does that mean that if you supplement with pre-formed folate you’re in the clear to drink as much tea as you like? *crosses fingers* 🙂

An excellent question. The answer is “probably” but there are no studies I know of. Better to play it safe. ?

Dave, I have been so inspired by you and Robb Wolf that I actually switched my major in college to become a Registered Dietitian. I am sorry for the “Hey” I added right before I typed this message to you and everyone else, but I was trying to blog on my Kindle Fire HD and like all kindles it failed to actually let me post the message. Anyways, my wife and I switched to the “Paleo” way of living Nov. 12, 2012 and I purchased your coffee and MCT oil on Jan. 13, 2013. Since I have been drinking your coffee, needless to say, I cannot think of a better way to start my morning. The amount of focus and energy I have is beyond this world, so much, that my studying habits in school have been boosted enough that I am able to study less and remember more to actually make straight A’s. It is funny when I go to the Whole Foods store in Dallas, TX a lot of people look at me like I am crazy, saying to themselves, “Why does that guy have 12 packs of butter in his cart?”, but I just laugh in my head and continue to be Bulletproof. My wife and I also purchased the “Better Baby Book” as well. Since then, we have switched to natural shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and body wash. We never even truly thought about how chemicals could actually make a difference in our lives, but it has. Of course, I have her on the supplementation you recommended in the book as well. I would like you to know that you and Joni are geniuses for coming up with that delicious Egg Fennel Soup. I have been using your techniques you mentioned in “Upgraded Chef” for all of my cooking. So I would like to end by saying I started at 198 lbs on Nov. 12, 2012 and as of today I am 171 lbs and more energetic than I have ever been. So truly, I wish to thank you very much for your hard work and the amount of research you did to be able to educate the world. As an RD, I will not be practicing under the regulations of the FDA’s crap food pyramid….

  • Hey, I got your book and have really been enjoying it. Just noticed something, though. Are you aware that in the sweeteners section you have listed “white sugar” and “sucrose”? And that you have sucrose in the green zone?

  • Brad

My wife and I have a 3month old child and I’m wondering if it’s ok for my wife to take MCT oil since she is breast feeding. She read on some webstie that MCT oil should be avoided while breast feeding but I think that’s total b.s.! Anybody have any input on this???

  • Thelma Marais

Congrats to both you and Lana. Would love to know your views on placenta encapsulation, if any?

I fully endorse this book and the BP lifestyle:)

I really want to share my story for all the women BP’ers out there, but also to ask a quick question. I got into the bulletproof diet, including the bulletproof coffee in the morning, in the hopes of normalizing my periods – and in approx 1.5 – 2 months I had a completely normal period for the first time in 4 years (I had not even HAD a period at all for 4 years, despite all my hormonal panels saying I was “normal”.) After numerous doctors telling me that this was “just the way my body was” and that I was one of those people “who would just never have a normal period” – I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I think the combo of extra protein and lots of healthy fats really made a difference. At the same time, I bought the Better Baby Book, because we were thinking of having a baby sometime in the next year or two (and thinking at this time that we would probably have to go to fertility specialists to accomplish this). Anyways, after implementing everything you suggested, I couldn’t believe it when my period arrived – and it was PERFECT. No heavy cramping, etc. Then, approx two weeks later – we conceived!! We are now 14 weeks pregnant. All of this after 2 endocrinologists and fertility specialist told me that I would have to go to a fertility clinic to get pregnant.

So my question is related to my pregnancy. For the first 7.5 weeks I felt amazing. Tons of energy, eating super healthy, still active, etc. Then the dreaded all-day morning sickness kicked in. The only thing I could eat was carbs – bread, potatoes, rice, crackers, etc. Basically things I hardly EVER eat. I couldn’t be active, I was so tired and nauseous all the time. All of this carb-loading meant that I gained quite a bit of weight in this time. This lasted until week 14 🙁 I am just starting to feel normal now. I want to be active again, I am actually craving vegetables and protein again – but I am wondering if there is anything I can do now to help cleanse my body / counteract the negative effects of the last seven weeks. Any guidance is deeply appreciated!

Wow this looks Amazing! I am going to get the book but so wish I had this information when I was pregnant and starting my family. My kids are now 11 and 14 and it is so difficult to get them to make the necessary changes I want my family to make to make them healthier. Especially the teen, I have the hardest time even getting him to eat breakfast. He skips it almost every day and then tells me how tired he is and can’t focus well in school in the mornings. But he doesn’t want to eat. He has actually asked me if he can drink coffee, I wondered what your thoughts were on Decaf Bulletproof coffee for teens? I am trying to get him to eat but most days he goes off to school with nothing to eat until lunch around 12:30. I wouldn’t have ever thought about him drinking coffee before finding the Bulletproof brand but I am actually considering it since it would probably be better then nothing. Would love some advice. Thanks and best of luck to you with this book. It is so needed for people looking to make these decisions early. I wish I knew then what I know now. Good Luck!

  • Roxanne

Hi! So…you guys knocked me up with this book. Seriously. We had been trying for a while, no success. I went for tests to take a peek inside, and aside from a sad history of a ruptured ovarian cyst that left disaster in its wake that had to be cleaned up with surgery, I was still struggling with endometriosis (inflammation!!) AND a new ovarian cyst AND low ovarian reserve. I followed this book strictly, starting in July and got my big fat positive by September. Colour me freaked. I was in the middle of undergoing tests for fertility, thinking that IVF was going to be my only option, and some of the tests are cycle dependent. Imagine my shock while I was waiting for my latest cycle to end so that I could complete the very last test to determine whether I would be a candidate for IVF (did I mention that I’m over 35?, but that cycle just kept on going. Four pregnancy tests later–why would I believe just the one!–and I’m officially pregnant. Now I’m in the throes of Bulletproof university, listening to the podcasts and building a library of the books from the FANTASTIC guests you have on. I wish I could send you flowers. Thank you, forever.

    • Marisa

Hi Roxanne, I’m about to embark on fertility treatments as well, but am going to give the diet detailed in the book a chance. Can I just ask what your AMH level was prior to following the book, as that is my issue?

  • Dave we are promoting and selling your Better Baby Book on our health shop to our parent members. Thank you for your beautiful book! I am really enjoying it. Quick question: is there any reason why fruits like blueberries and strawberries are considered better for the baby than sweet potatoes in spite of the fructose? What were some of your considerations here? Just curious. Thank you!
