7 Bulletproof Drinks for the 4th of July
This weekend you face a clear choice – drinking your way to a dull brain or enjoying the freedom of feeling great. It’s that simple. Do you want to be a half-step slow, struggling to keep up with the conversation? Or do you want a sharp mind that lets you enjoy the party to the fullest?
Sugary drinks (and most alcoholic ones) don’t give you lasting energy. But they do suck your well-being straight down the drain – turning a July 4th celebration into a fuzzy night not worth remembering.
Consider the research published in JAMA Internal Medicine. It looks at data from more than 40,000 people and concludes that added sucrose/fructose in your diet and drinks can increase the risk of heart attacks by up to 400 percent (take a look at Dr. Mark Hyman’s breakdown of the study for a closer look).
But there’s no need to worry. The team at Bulletproof has concocted an extraordinary drinks menu that allows you to blend pleasure with performance.
Check ‘em out.
Big Taste, No Booze
- 1 part full-fat coconut milk (from non-BPA can)
- 3 parts brewed coffee, cooled (the new French Kick dark roast pairs well with chocolate)
- 1 tablespoon chocolate powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla powder
- 1 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
- Lots of ice
Shake to mix ingredients and create some foaminess. Pour into glass and enjoy.
- 2 cups lemonade (see recipe below)
- chopped fresh basil leaves
Make the lemonade recipe below, then stir in fresh basil and ice. Serve with basil for garnish.
Gingermint Green Tea Cooler
- 6 cups boiling water
- 6 organic green tea bags
- 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
- 1 cup organic fresh mint leaves
- Stevia or MitoSweet
- Extra mint leaves for presentation
Steep first four ingredients for 15 minutes, strain the brew, add stevia and lemon as desired and to taste. Chill. Garnish with mint leaves.
Sparkling Plum & Rootbeer Bitters
Bitters are a blend of herbs, roots, bark, and spices that have been extracted with alcohol. They usually have a complex floral flavor with sour or bitter undertones, hence the name.
One tasty (and fairly Bulletproof) way to use bitters is by simply mixing a few drops with quality sparkling mineral water. You can use all kinds of bitters; a Bulletproof staff favorite is the Plum & Rootbeer mix from Vancouver-based Bittersling. While bitters technically have alcohol, the amount is trivial.
Kid Friendly Drinks
- 8-9 Organic Lemons
- 6-8 cups of filtered water
- Stevia, xylitol, erythritol or MitoSweet as desired
This one you taste and adjust as you go until you get just the right tart/sweet ratio. It’s also nice to add organic smashed raspberries to the pitcher and let it sit in the fridge while the flavors marinate together.
Red, White and Blue Smoothie
- 1 can (15 ounces) full-fat coconut milk (non-BPA can)
- 3/4 cup fresh organic raspberries
- 1 cup fresh organic blueberries
- Organic grated coconut
- Stevia or MitoSweet to taste (if needed; some of us like to leave the tartness untamed)
Blend the coconut milk with the raspberries until smooth. You can substitute frozen berries to make it super-chill. Or add more fresh ones if you want more tang. Garnish with lots of grated coconut and top with fresh blueberries.
Alcohol isn’t Bulletproof. But many of us drink it – especially to celebrate good times with friends and family. If you choose to drink, this guide will help you minimize your hangover (it’s available as an infographic, too). As a rule of thumb, tend toward clear liquor over beer or wine – unless it’s biohacked Dry Farms Wine.
Unfairly Simple Vodka
- 1 ampule of Unfair Advantage
- 2 ounces of potato vodka
- Lots of ice
- A spritz of lime
Shake like crazy in a martini shaker or give a quick blend.
It sounds like a strange combination, but it’s pretty damn good.
- 3 parts tequila
- 2 parts lime juice
- 1 part soda water
- 10 grams Bulletproof Collagen Protein
- Pink Himalayan salt to taste
- (Add jalapeno for a kickass variation)
Blend the first three ingredients. Then lightly blend in the collagen until just incorporated. Add salt to the rim if if you like.
These drinks will keep you relatively clear-headed and ensure a Bulletproof 4th. Enjoy them – responsibly, of course. We’d love to hear your ideas, too. Bonus points if you provide a recipe or link in your comment.
And if you do overindulge on the 4th – with food or drink – activated charcoal can bind up toxins and help you bounce back.
Cheers and have a great weekend.
