Natasha Vita-More: Transhumanism, Technology & the Future

Share:Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedIn

This episode stretches the boundaries of biohacking by looking at the futurist ideology and movement called transhumanism. Natasha Vita-More, an American designer, theorist and author, joined me on this episode to discuss the possible transformation of the human condition by developing technologies that enhance intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.

Natasha Vita-more is co-editor and author of The Transhumanist Reader: Classical and Contemporary Essays on the Science, Technology and Philosophy of the Human Future and designer and author of “Primo Posthuman,” a pioneering future whole body prototype. Vita-More is a professor at the University of Advancing Technology, and a Fellow of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and the Hybrid Reality Institute. She is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Humanity+.

Absolutely fascinating, thanks for the podcast!

My only other foray into this topic was kurzweil, and his pill popping ways turned me off a bit. Natasha on the other hand seems to have a great grasp on being connected to the earth, and all its living things. Artificial matter seems to be coming whether we like it or not. So the question seems how well we will be able to incorporate it within us without loosing the connection to living things which seems like a driving force for most. This is something we’re already dealing with today, and expect it to get even more intense. Having her husband & dog in the room when she goes to bed sounds quirky, yet makes a whole lot of sense. This podcast got me thinking. great work Dave, keep em coming

Really??? Dave you get an A for effort on this, but talk about inconsistencies and blather – good grief.

It’s puzzling how someone who claims to have been doing Transcendental Meditation for 40+ years (based on when Natasha said she started and guessing her age from the photo) could still be a) so attached to their ego that they would want to live in a mechanical body indefinitely and b) of the belief that you could somehow capture even a remote part of your “self” by thin slicing your brain and backing it up on a magnetic disk! Anyone who has meditated for that long would surely have a notion of the “silent witness” that exists in the unified field, and know without a doubt that a human being could never be replicated mechanically.

Give me a “kick ass every day, worry about maximizing every day, and don’t worry about when you die” attitude any day.

NVM is one of the more annoying Transhumanist groupies to come on the scene since I started studying these issues back in the 80’s, after reading Drexler.

I have been a long time nanotechnologist/scientists/transhumanist, but I think that too many serious questions get lost in the “RAH RAH” boosterism about these issues.

First of all, the claim that our identity is contained solely in the brain, or is merely a function of our connectome is silly. One of the things that so many transhumanist often ignore is the role of our brain biochemistry.

For example, we know that the hormone oxytocin enhances our bonding experiences and is responsible for our feelings of love and attachment.

What about the other estrogens, testosterone, or neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin? What about the creative effects of choline?

To emulate the brain, it isn’t enough to just re-create the connectome, you have to recreate the vagaries of neuro chemistry. That it turn is often regulated by various body processes (otherwise known as “living”).

Sure, at some point we might be able to emulate our connectome, but that wouldn’t be a human being, it would be a computer programmed to act like a human being.

Beyond that, there is someone else that gets short shrift in the whole Transhuman agenda and and that is the issue of access.

NVM said she wants everyone to have access to this technology, and I believe her , but you would have to be disfunctionally naive to think that’s actually going to happen.

The wealthiest people on the planet are going to be the ones who control this technology. They will have first dibs on it. They will decide who gets it and who doesn’t and they will make damn sure that no one will be able to challenge their dominance.

Moreover, these people are overwhelmingly antagonistic to the rest of humanity. They see us as “weeds” and they will have no compunction about ridding the world of us, once they have the means to do so.

If you doubt this, I refer you to history for multitudinous examples of how the elites have often treated others when they could.

I have always looked forward to the future, but I also approach it with great trepidation, because I know how powerful the Malthusian class really is.

      I have been a long time nanotechnologist/scientists/transhumanist

Except that Drexler’s “nanotechnology” can’t exist because he got the physics wrong. No wonder Drexler had to get his “doctorate” from MIT’s Media Lab instead of from one of MIT’s rigorous science or engineering departments.

  • me

re testosterone being an issue because of conversion to DHT (around min 30), there’s a thing called finasteride for that

  • rerete

oh, anyone that have done meditation would know that its not possible to recreate a human mechanically? where are these evidence at?

  • watcher

Hay Dave Natasha is talking future?? Its here , only over 30 years ago. Check out a man named Jimmy Carter. REPLICA . Ages ? But changes in unnatural ways which indicate something far more advanced. Focus on the different shape ears. toughest part to replicate

  • Lucretia

Natasha overlooks the fact that such technology will likely be monopolized by the elite as a way of enslaving the rest of humanity on an industrial scale as Aldous Huxley warned about, as Edward Bernays said was a real plan of the Elite, as BF Skinner worked towards with his countless studies on humans and animals torturing them to see how they could mind control people through chips, frequencies and reprogramming their DNA.

One only has to have listen to a Aldous Huxley interview with Mike Wallace in which he also outlines the plan for a “more hierarchical system controlled by bureaucracies of big business or big government” in this 1958 interview:

The following is an excellent article and interview with Ray Kurzweil:
Notice the article points out: “the newspaper reports concerning the issue were absent a key disclaimer which Kurzweil admits in his book – such technology will not be available to the general public and instead will be controlled by a technocratic elite who will attempt to become super beings by merging with machines.”
Dave I don’t know why you give these people any voice. So many have no clue the hell that is has been planned for us.
